July Birthstone: Ruby — Colour, Origins, and the Pigeon’s Blood Standard
Ruby is corundum built for daily wear — the same mineral as sapphire, coloured red by trace chromium, and second only to diamond in hardness. The July birthstone is one of the four precious gemstones, and among them, the one whose structure gives it the fewest compromises as a centre stone. What separates a fine ruby from an ordinary one comes down to colour, origin, and treatment — the three variables this guide works through in order.
What Is a Ruby
Ruby is the red variety of corundum, an aluminum oxide mineral. Sapphire is the same mineral in every other colour. What separates the two is a single trace element: chromium produces ruby’s red, while iron, titanium, and other elements produce sapphire’s blue and its other hues. There is no structural difference between a ruby and a sapphire beyond what colours the crystal.
Colour classification has a hard boundary. A stone must clear a defined threshold of red hue, tone, and saturation to be graded ruby; below that threshold, the same corundum is classified and sold as pink sapphire. This is a grading judgment with real consequences for value, and it is why two visually similar red-pink stones can occupy very different price categories. The name itself comes from the Latin ruber, red — one of the more literal names in gemology for a stone that has rarely needed embellishment to make its case.

Colour and the Pigeon’s Blood Standard
Colour is the dominant value driver in ruby, more than clarity or carat weight. The finest stones show a vivid, pure red with a faint blue-purple secondary hue and strong red fluorescence under both UV light and daylight — chromium is responsible for the colour and the fluorescence in the same instant, which is why the best rubies appear to glow rather than simply reflect light.
The trade term for this top-tier colour is pigeon’s blood — a descriptive standard, not a formal grading scale, that originated with rubies from the Mogok mines in Myanmar. It remains the benchmark against which ruby colour from any origin is measured, including material from Mozambique and Sri Lanka that increasingly reaches or exceeds it.
Below pigeon’s blood, rubies range through purplish-red, orangy-red, and increasingly pink tones as saturation drops. None of these are lesser stones in an absolute sense, but each occupies a different position in the market, and the difference is visible to the eye once you know what to look for.

Origins and Mining
Ruby sourcing has shifted meaningfully over the past two decades. Myanmar’s Mogok Valley remains the historic benchmark origin — the source of the pigeon’s blood standard itself — but output has declined and access has grown more complex. Mozambique, largely unknown as a ruby source before the Montepuez deposit was discovered in 2009, is now the dominant supplier of fine ruby to the global market by volume.
Myanmar (Mogok) — The traditional reference origin. Mogok rubies are prized for a vivid, slightly purplish-red with the strongest fluorescence in the trade. Supply is limited and origin alone commands a premium at auction.
Mozambique (Montepuez) — The largest modern source by volume, producing stones that frequently match or approach pigeon’s blood colour. The deposit has also produced some of the largest fine rubies found this century, including the Estrela de Fura.
Sri Lanka — A long-established source producing lighter, more purplish-red to pink-red stones, generally with excellent clarity relative to other origins.
Thailand and Vietnam — Thailand’s Chanthaburi deposits are largely depleted and the region now functions primarily as a cutting and trading centre; Vietnam’s Luc Yen mines produce material closer in character to Mogok stones, though in smaller volume.

Clarity, Silk, and Star Rubies
Ruby clarity standards differ from diamond clarity standards in the same way emeralds’ do—inclusions are expected, and their type matters more than their mere presence. The most common inclusion is rutile silk: fine, needle-like crystals that can soften a stone’s colour or, in the right concentration and orientation, diffuse light in a way that enhances the visual appeal without a loss of transparency.
When rutile silk aligns in three intersecting directions and the stone is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, the result is asterism—a six-rayed star that moves across the dome of the stone as it turns. Star rubies are graded on a separate set of criteria from faceted stones: the sharpness, centring, and symmetry of the star, alongside the body colour beneath it.
For faceted rubies, eye-visible inclusions are common even in fine stones, and a completely eye-clean ruby of strong colour and meaningful size is genuinely rare. As with emerald, the trade’s expectation is a stone clean enough not to distract from the colour, not a stone with the clarity standard applied to diamond.
Treatment: Heat and Beyond
The majority of commercial rubies are heat-treated — a process that dissolves excess rutile silk, improves colour saturation, and is accepted and disclosed throughout the trade. Heat treatment alone does not meaningfully compromise the stone’s durability, and a well-heat-treated ruby is considered standard market material, not a compromised one.
A smaller share of lower-grade rough is treated more aggressively with lead-glass filling: molten glass is used to fill significant surface-reaching fractures, which can dramatically improve apparent clarity in material that would otherwise be unsellable as ruby. This is a fundamentally different category of treatment — it materially reduces the stone’s durability and value, and it must be disclosed as such on any laboratory report.
Treatment disclosure: Always request a laboratory report from GIA or another recognised lab before purchasing a ruby above a modest price point. The report will state treatment type and extent — heat only, heat with residue, or glass-filled — and that distinction should directly inform both the price you pay and how the stone is cared for afterward.
History and Symbolism
Ruby has carried the weight of a supreme gemstone across more cultures and centuries than almost any other stone. Sanskrit texts named it ratnaraj, king of gemstones, and Burmese warriors were said to embed ruby fragments beneath their skin believing the stone would make them invincible in battle. Ancient Hindu tradition associated ruby with the sun and considered a fine ruby capable of guarding its owner’s health, wealth, and love.
The Mogok Valley has been mined for ruby for over 800 years, making it one of the longest continuously worked gem deposits in the world. Rubies moved along Silk Road trade routes into China as early as the Han Dynasty, and by the medieval period the stone was firmly established in European royal regalia, prized above sapphire and emerald in many courts for its rarity at fine colour and size.
Ruby is the gem traditionally given for 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries, a status that reflects its long-standing association with passion and enduring commitment. It remains one of the four precious gemstones — a classification, alongside diamond, sapphire, and emerald, that has held for centuries and still shapes how the stone is positioned and valued today.
The Estrela de Fura and the Modern Record Market
The clearest evidence of Mozambique’s arrival as a serious ruby origin is the Estrela de Fura — a 55.22-carat ruby cut from a 101-carat piece of rough discovered near Montepuez in July 2022. Analysed by the Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF), the stone was confirmed as natural and unheated, with a beautifully saturated, evenly distributed medium-strong red. SSEF’s analysis identified diaspore within a fluid inclusion — geological proof that the stone had never been heat-treated at any point in its formation. On June 8, 2023, the Estrela de Fura sold at Sotheby’s New York for US$34.8 million — the highest price ever paid for a ruby at auction, surpassing the previous record held by the 25.59-carat Sunrise Ruby, a Mogok, Myanmar stone that sold for US$30.3 million at Sotheby’s Geneva in 2015. The result reset the market’s understanding of what a modern-origin ruby, entirely unheated, can command against the historic Mogok benchmark.
Ruby as a Centre Stone
Of the coloured gemstones, ruby carries the fewest structural caveats as an engagement ring centre stone. At 9 on the Mohs scale, with excellent toughness and no cleavage, it withstands daily contact in a way that emerald, moonstone, and pearl cannot. A ruby engagement ring is a design decision built on colour and permanence rather than one requiring a defensive setting.
That does not remove design work — it shifts where the work happens. Proportion, the depth of the pavilion relative to the crown, and how the stone’s red reads against the metal are resolved in CAD before any stone is set at Lumi. A ruby cut too deep or too shallow loses colour saturation regardless of the rough material’s quality; the cutting decision is as consequential as the origin.
Metal choice interacts directly with ruby’s red. Platinum and white gold provide neutral contrast that lets the stone’s colour read on its own terms. Yellow gold intensifies warmth and can push a borderline stone toward a richer appearance. Rose gold is a more deliberate choice — its warmth can either complement or compete with the stone’s red, depending on the specific tone of both.

Care and Maintenance
Ruby’s hardness makes it one of the lower-maintenance coloured gemstones, with one significant caveat: treatment type. Heat-treated rubies, which account for the majority of the market, can generally be cleaned with warm soapy water, and ultrasonic or steam cleaning is typically safe given the stone’s hardness and lack of cleavage.
Lead-glass filled rubies are the exception and should be treated with the same caution as a heavily treated emerald. Ultrasonic vibration and steam heat can damage the filled fractures, visibly degrading the stone’s apparent clarity. These stones should be cleaned only with warm soapy water and a soft cloth and should never be sent for ultrasonic or steam service without confirming the treatment type first.
Beyond the cleaning method, ruby requires little special accommodation. Its resistance to scratching and chipping under normal wear is a large part of why it functions so well as a daily-wear centre stone in the first place.
